International Christmas Market Essen

The pre-Christmas magic

Essen makes Christmas dreams come true

12 November until 23 December 2022

Let's start with something hot off the press: The International Christmas Market Essen has been nominated as one of 20 European markets for the "European Best Christmas Market 2023". Help us and make the International Christmas Market the winner with your online vote! The good thing is: You can vote per end device not only once, but daily. And this until the end of the voting period on 8 December 2022.

And here's how to vote online:

The scent of roasted almonds, potato pancakes and mulled wine fills the crisp air. The squares and shopping streets of Essen's city centre are aglow with lights. Welcome to the International Christmas Market Essen! With around 170 stalls, it is one of the most beautiful Christmas markets in Germany and has already won several awards for its diversity and beauty. Scattered throughout the city centre, the huts stand under a sea of twinkling lights - an atmosphere that makes a visit festive and dreamlike.

A highlight this year is the "X-Mas Lounge" on Kennedyplatz. On around 300 square metres and over two floors, it combines a Christmas market café and sales stalls. From the outdoor terrace, you can enjoy coffee and cake and let your gaze wander over the festively decorated square under the twinkling net of lights.

If you would like to give your loved ones an individually decorated gingerbread heart, you can come to the Radio Essen stand on Kettwiger Straße on the 26th of November. For a small donation to "Aktion Lichtblicke", the gingerbread heart will be decorated there with your desired inscription. If you want to get into the Christmas mood a little now, why not switch on the Radio Essen Christmas Channel .

Sustainable Christmas Market

In the spirit of the "European Green Capital 2017", sustainability plays a major role at the International Christmas Market. In order to respond to the current energy crisis, organizers and traders are also saving around 20 percent electricity compared to the previous year by dispensing with heaters and using shorter lighting times and fewer LEDs.

  • Only "green electricity" will be used.
  • All caterers will dispense with disposable plastic tableware for consumption on site.
  • There is a deposit system for cups and glasses.
  • There is an absolute ban on plastic bags.
  • The organisers attach importance to regional, fair trade and organic products as well as a good ecological balance when choosing traders.
