Essen benefits from an excellent motorway network. With direct access to the A3/A40 and A52 motorways, you are optimally connected to the national and international motorway network.
Essen Low Emission Zone
When making your travel plans, please note that since 2012 a continuous low emission zone has been set up in the Ruhr region, extending from Duisburg via Essen to Dortmund. Therefore, only vehicles with a green sticker are allowed to enter the Low Emission Zone Ruhr.
Travel comfortably and environmentally friendly by train. Over 100 IC, EC and ICE long-distance trains stop at Essen Central Station every day. All major tram and underground lines stop directly at the main station, so you can also reach your destination in Essen in a relaxed manner by public transport.
Düsseldorf Airport can be reached by car via the A52/A44 motorway in just under 20 minutes. In addition, the S1 suburban railway line and several regional express and long-distance trains connect Essen with the airport (journey time approx. 21 minutes). With over 500 take-offs and landings daily, it offers flight connections to over 170 cities in Germany and abroad. Other airports in the vicinity: Cologne/Bonn (approx. one hour by train) and Dortmund (approx. 45 minutes by car).
