If you love the streams and rivers of the region, the Water Route will be perfect for you. It connects the New Emscher Valley and the Ruhr Valley. The route, which covers 19.5 kilometres, travels along the Rhein-Herne-Kanal in the north of Essen. Towards the end you can decide whether you wish to cycle off to the east to Werden old town on the RuhrtalRadweg or west to the historic centre of Kettwig.
