Weekend trip

Urban hiking through meadows, forests and by the lake

Day 1: Into the hiking boots

Big city hiking... Right in the middle of the metropolis and yet so far in the countryside - that's only possible in Essen! During the day, you can hike the Kettwiger Panoramasteig , which can be divided into a north and south route. On the north route, you should definitely plan a stopover at the Rutherhof . Here you can play swin and football golf, for example. Afterwards, you can enjoy a tasty snack in the restaurant. Oh yes, and you can eat fresh and extremely tasty ostrich meat in a wide variety of variations. Absolutely recommended! Depending on where you live, an evening stroll through the historic old towns of Kettwig and Werden is worthwhile. The two southern districts are captivating with their half-timbered houses, proximity to the Ruhr, good restaurants and bars. Perfect for winding down the evening.

Day 2: On the road on foot and by boat

After a restful night, it's back into your hiking boots and up onto the second major hiking trail in Essen, the BaldeneySteig . It takes you around Baldeneysee for about 26 km. But don't worry, you can also take a shortcut here and return to your starting point on the Weiße Flotte , for example. The boat trip is highly recommended anyway when you're at the lake. Snacks and drinks are available on board, and the fantastic views are free of charge! At lunchtime we recommend a round of mini-golf at the restaurant Heimliche Liebe . This will (hopefully) relax you and is a good change from the hike up the 600 metres of the BaldeneySteig. At Heimliche Liebe you can also stop off in the beer garden. In addition to good food and cold drinks, you have a sensational view from high up over the lake and down into the Ruhr valley. After the descent, you have earned your next break. Along the lake there are several places to eat and drink, the longest beach in the city, Seaside Beach Baldeney , or simply the kiosk at the regatta course, where life pulsates and food, day trippers and tourists meet. From here you can quickly take the train back to your hotel or the main station for the return journey.
