Interactive virtual reality film experience

Immerse yourself in the early days of aviation—a time when flying was still a great dream for people. “Aufwind” takes you on a virtual reality journey through time to meet the German pioneers of aviation. With “Aufwind”, we have created a unique film experience in which you step into the role of Thea Rasche, a woman from Essen. She was one of the world’s first aerobatic pilots and achieved international fame as the “Flying Fräulein”. With her, you will overcome boundaries and resistance, stand up to prejudice and show everyone what you are made of.

What makes “Aufwind” special is its blend of film and virtual world. You become part of the story, travel through Essen at the beginning of the 20th century and, at the end, even take off in an aircraft from the former Essen-Rotthausen Airport, thanks to virtual reality. A “Motion Seat” makes your virtual movements physically tangible. You can feel vibrations, wind, heat, cold and even smells, immersing yourself completely in the story. You can even control the cars and aircraft yourself using the steering wheel on the “Motion Seat”.

The cast of “Aufwind” includes acclaimed actors such as Wotan Wilke Möhring, Luise Befort, Michelle Barthel, Moritz Führmann, Patrick Joswig and Hendrik Heutmann. “Aufwind” is a film that not only tells the story of a historical event, but also addresses an important topic and conveys an inspiring message: the importance of self-determination and the courage to fight for your dreams despite all obstacles.

The groundbreaking “Volume Capture” technology was used to film the actors. It enables real acting performances to be recorded in 360 degrees and seamlessly integrated into digital worlds. Unlike other methods such as “Motion Capture”, no movement or emotion data is lost. “Volume Capture” technology was also used to produce “Essen 1887 – A Mixed Reality Journey Through Time”, which tells the story of the cultural upheaval in Essen in a unique way.

Your time with “Aufwind” consists of three stages. It begins with a museum experience in which you learn all about the early days of aviation in Essen through photographs and original exhibits from the Ruhr Museum. In the second part, we take you into our small “cinema room”, where you will learn more about the history of aviation and its pioneering women from Essen. Finally, the highlight—quite literally—takes you above the clouds. Seated in the “Motion Seat” and wearing a VR headset, you will immerse yourself completely in Essen in 1912 and become an aviation pioneer yourself.
