Cycling in Essen

Impressive industrial heritage, green open spaces and vibrant city life — all of this is easy to explore by bike in Essen. A well-developed network of cycle paths covering around 260 kilometres is available. Many of these paths run along disused railway lines, where coal and steel were transported until just a few decades ago. Today, these routes offer a relaxing cycling experience, often away from road traffic.

City Route

The City Route takes you along a stretch of around 18 kilometres from the Rhine-Herne Canal in northern Essen to Lake Baldeney in the south, passing many sights for which Essen is known far beyond its borders, including Essen Cathedral, Museum Folkwang and Villa Hügel.
