This year, Museum Folkwang is dedicating a major retrospective, “I, Gustave Courbet”, to one of the most influential artists of the 19th century and a pioneer of modernism. From July 17 to November 8, the exhibition presents around 90 works by this remarkable painter and rebel. Highlights include works such as “Le fou de peur” (1844), “L’Après-dînée à Ornans” (1849), “L’origine du monde” (1866) and “Jo, la belle Irlandaise” (1866). In nine chapters, the retrospective explores the central themes of Courbet’s work. Visitors can enjoy self-portraits, landscapes, erotic depictions, works on 19th-century Parisian society and pieces from Courbet’s time in exile in Switzerland.
