Insta Wonderland: In flip-flops and swim trunks to see van Gogh
Day 1: Out in the open
Action and relaxation at the beach: climbing, stand-up paddleboarding, or simply enjoying a cocktail in a deck chair – at Seaside Beach Baldeney, you’re guaranteed a sensational day with a view of the beautiful Baldeneysee. If the view alone isn’t enough, you can later take a leisurely rickshaw ride around the lake, for example. On this tour, which is around 14 km long, you’ll learn a lot about how Baldeneysee came into being and the mining industry in the surrounding area. And there’s an absolute highlight in store for you in the evening when it comes to taking in the views. From the rooftop lounge at Lil’Tiger, you’ll enjoy an incredible view over Essen and the Ruhr region, while also being treated to cocktails and great food.
Day 2: Art, shopping & World Heritage
After such a relaxing day around the lake, enjoy a good breakfast before heading to Museum Folkwang to admire the permanent collection featuring artists such as van Gogh, Monet, Cézanne, Picasso, and Richter, or visit one of the upcoming special exhibitions. You can easily spend a few hours at the 2020 Museum of the Year before heading to the “Rü” for lunch – one of Essen’s trendiest and most popular shopping streets. It’s worth browsing the independent boutiques, or you could have lunch at one of the coolest little restaurants or simply enjoy a coffee in the shade of the Japanese cherry trees. If you’re on the Rü on a Saturday, be sure to make time for a stroll around the weekly market. But beware: don’t arrive too late! To round off your cultural day perfectly and get some fresh top-notch content for Insta, head to the UNESCO World Heritage Site Zollverein in the afternoon. On a guided tour or a wander around the colliery grounds, you’ll discover the most exciting industrial photo spots. If you’re still up for more, plan a side trip to the Red Dot Design Museum at Zollverein. You’ll find Europe’s largest exhibition of contemporary design here.
