From the Moon to the Tropics and then off to the pasture

380,000 kilometers in one day? No problem. From getting to the bottom of the facts to the Moon, into the tropics, and off to the pasture in the evening — anything is possible in ESSEN!

Get ready for an extreme nature trip. In the morning, fuel up at Café Bohnenkartell with a sensationally good coffee to start the day (you’ll need it), then travel to the Moon by bike, bus or train. The barren, moon-like Schurenbachhalde is a truly unforgettable experience. Across the Ruhr region, spoil heaps were created from mining waste; today, they make perfect, artistically designed vantage points. From the shadow of the almost 15-meter-high Bramme, you’ll enjoy an incredible view of Essen and the surrounding cities. Next, head to one of Europe’s largest urban parks, Grugapark. Right in the middle, more than 500 animals are waiting for you — the colorful flamingos are the absolute highlight. Nearby, you can round off the day on Essen’s best nightlife mile, “Rü,” Rüttenscheider Straße. At Fleischerei on the Rü, you can enjoy a taste of the pasture, at least in culinary terms. Here, you’ll savor the finest meat, whether beef, pork, chicken or lamb. Seafood specialties are also on the menu. We recommend a good glass of wine to accompany the top meat and fish dishes. If you fall in love with a particular wine, you can pick up a few bottles at the restaurant’s own wine shop. And if you’d like to continue your little trip around the world after dinner, the “Rü” has plenty of bars, cafés and pubs where you can linger into the night!
