Schurenbach Heap
The almost 15-metre-high rolled steel plate on the plateau of the spoil tip is a reminder of times gone by.
One of the youngest of its kind – Schurenbachhalde
Schurenbachhalde in Essen is one of the region’s youngest reclaimed spoil heaps. It was no longer needed after the Zollverein coal mine closed in 1986 and was transformed into “Waldpark Schurenbach.” A network of paths winds up Schurenbachhalde in switchbacks, leading to the summit. Numerous benches along the way invite you to stop and enjoy the view. American sculptor Richard Serra was commissioned to redesign the spoil heap and chose to create an imposing sculpture in the middle of the plateau. The rolled-steel sculpture “Bramme für das Ruhrgebiet” is both a monument and a symbol of the region’s industrial past. It is almost 15 meters tall, 4 meters wide, and 13 centimeters thick.
