Aalto Theatre
Alvar Aalto’s theatre in Essen brings humane architecture together with opera, ballet and concert culture—a refined venue filled with sound and movement.
The aesthetic concept continues inside the building. Here, Aalto brought his vision of “human architecture” to life, beyond rigid theatrical grandeur. The elegant foyer is therefore a popular venue for piano matinees and vocal recitals.
The Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung called it the most beautiful theater built after 1945. It opened in 1988 and has 1,125 seats.
The Aalto Theater is the distinguished home of the Aalto Music Theatre, Aalto Ballet Theatre Essen, and the Essen Philharmonic Orchestra—a place where art is presented at the highest level. With its award-winning and often spectacular opera and ballet productions, it is now considered one of Germany’s leading music theaters by critics and audiences alike.
