Lake Baldeney
With the large Ruhr reservoir in the south of the city, Essen has a superb local recreation area to offer. Dammed in 1931 to serve as a water reservoir and to purify the Ruhr’s water, Baldeneysee is now a recreational area of regional significance. Rowing clubs, sailing and surfing schools around the 2.7-square-kilometre lake invite visitors to enjoy active pursuits. Once a year, Germany’s sailing elite gather here for Essener Woche, the country’s largest inland lake regatta. For sporty visitors to the lake, one of the greatest pleasures is completing the 14.7-kilometre loop around it on inline skates, on foot or by bike. Those who prefer a more comfortable outing can admire the wooded shores of the lake and the Ruhr from the boats of the “Weiße Flotte”. A landmark high above the lake is Villa Hügel, the residence of the Krupp industrialist family until the 1940s and now the setting for prestigious art history exhibitions. Weiße Flotte Baldeney From April to October, Weiße Flotte Baldeney sets sail for a circular cruise on Essen’s home waters or even a longer cruise on the Ruhr to neighbouring Mülheim—with a stop in Essen-Kettwig available on request. From June to September, scheduled services also operate aboard the MS innogy, a methanol-powered, CO2-neutral electric vessel.
