Burgaltendorf Castle Ruins
In the far southeast of the city, near the border with the neighbouring cities of Bochum and Hattingen, stands a Romanesque castle ruin in the district of Burgaltendorf, featuring the best-preserved residential tower in North Rhine-Westphalia. According to tradition, it dates back to the second half of the 12th century. The complex consists of an outer bailey and a main castle with well-preserved curtain walls. In the past, both sections were surrounded by a moat.
The tower, including its viewing platform, is open to visitors free of charge from 3 to 5 pm every Saturday, Sunday and public holiday between mid-April and mid-October. Guided tours can be arranged with the Heimat- und Burgverein Burgaltendorf e.V.
