Civic Houses on the Market Square

Historic townhouses on the market square

Opposite the Town Hall, you can see the townhouses on the market square. The Neoclassical buildings were built by merchants in 1832. The caduceus (symbol of the god of commerce) can be seen on the front door of No. 73. No. 79 housed the Hirsch-Apotheke, which closed in 1979. The pharmacy’s interior and the stag above the entrance are on display at the LVR Open-Air Museum in Kommern. The partly slate-clad No. 71 served as a post office from 1825 to 1876, with a turning area for mail coaches. The Protestant rectory (Nos. 81/83) was built 50 years later and designed to match the three Neoclassical houses.
