Essen City Hall

The Darmstadt architect Theodor Seifert was commissioned to design the “new town hall.”

The foundation stone for the new town hall was laid on 1 July 1975. The topping-out ceremony was held exactly two years later, on 1 July 1977. The town hall was officially opened with its first council meeting on 7 November 1979. Essen Town Hall is 106 metres high, and from the 22nd floor, visitors can enjoy an impressive panorama of the city and part of the Ruhr region from a height of around 100 metres.

Its 330,000 cubic metres of enclosed space house 69,000 square metres of office space, a parliamentary area, more than 700 parking spaces in a multi-storey underground car park, a studio theatre and various technical rooms. The town hall provides around 1,900 workplaces. Echoing the previous building, sandstone statues of Essen’s patron saints Cosmas and Damian also stand in the entrance area. Sculptor Heinrich Kröger created them for the old town hall.
