The Eickwinkel spoil tip is practically the little sister of the neighboring Schurenbach spoil tip, as at 21 meters high and 5.3 hectares in area, it is considerably lower and narrower. But visitors can also enjoy fascinating panoramic views across Essen, Bottrop and Gladbeck from here. The name of the spoil tip comes from an old term for the oak tree.

- Getting there
- Getting there by car: The Schurenbach and Eickwinkel spoil tips are conveniently located near the A42 and Exit 14 Essen-Altenessen. From here, turn left onto Heßlerstraße if coming from Dortmund, or right if coming from Duisburg. Drive under the motorway. After approx. 1.2 km, turn left at the second traffic light onto Emscherstraße. Go under the motorway again and park. Behind the motorway bridge, the steps on the left lead up Schurenbach spoil tip to the summit. A few hundred metres further north, Eickwinkel spoil tip can be accessed from the cycle path on the Nordsterntrasse.
Alternatively, if there is no space left, take the other direction from the motorway exit: turn right onto Heßlerstraße if coming from Dortmund, or left if coming from Duisburg. At the next junction, turn right onto Nordsternstraße (no entry, except for residents). Park at the roadside before the left-hand bend and walk towards Schurenbach spoil tip on the right.
Destination for your navigation system: Emscherstraße, junction with Eickwinkelstraße in Essen, or Nordsternstraße.
Getting there by bus and train: Take the U11 from Essen Hauptbahnhof or Essen-Altenessen station (RE 3, S2) towards Gelsenkirchen-Buerer Straße and get off at Heßlerstraße. Use the south exit and walk along Heßlerstraße, then turn onto Nordsternstraße at the first junction. At the left-hand bend, turn right onto gravel paths leading to Schurenbach spoil tip (500 metres on foot), or walk around Schurenbach spoil tip to Eickwinkel spoil tip.
Getting there by bicycle / e-bike and on foot: The Emscherweg, Emscher-Park-Radweg, Essen.Erleben.Nord routes and the Natur Route (Neue Wege zum Wasser) pass near the spoil tips (junction 61). The Nordsternbahn cycle path connects to Zeche Zollverein and the Erzbahntrasse. The ZollvereinSteig crosses both Schurenbach and Eickwinkel spoil tips.
