Attraction
Historic Town Center of Werden
With its historic center, numerous attractions, and location on the Ruhr, Werden is one of Essen’s popular residential areas.
The Basilica of St. Ludgerus dates back to around 800, when the Frisian missionary Liudger, who later became the first Bishop of Münster, founded a Benedictine monastery here. The abbey church was built in its present form in 1256. One of the last monuments of Romanesque architecture in the Rhineland, this cruciform, three-aisled gallery basilica is also a historical document.
