Lucius Church, Essen

St. Lucius Church is located north of St. Ludgerus Basilica. Construction of St. Lucius Church began in 995, and it was consecrated in 1063.

It served as a branch church of Werden Abbey and is considered one of the oldest parish churches north of the Alps.
Originally a simple hall church, it was given two low side aisles around 1100. After secularisation, it was used first as a granary and later as a residential building. The chancel apse and the uppermost floor of the tower were demolished for this purpose. Reconstruction began in 1957, and St. Lucius Church was reconsecrated in 1965.
