Margarethenhöhe
Margarethenhöhe is an architectural gem, regarded as one of the finest examples of the German garden city movement.
The idyllic district was founded in 1906 by Margarethe Krupp on the occasion of her daughter Bertha’s wedding. Designed by architect Georg Metzendorf, the settlement featured well-appointed apartments in houses no more than three storeys high.
Although the settlement has a cohesive appearance, hardly any two houses are alike. Varied design features such as bay windows and covered walkways, curved gables, pilasters and natural-stone plinths give each house its own character. The Ruhr Museum maintains a model apartment on the Margarethenhöhe, furnished to reflect the historic period. Part of the settlement was designated a protected monument in 1987.
