Market Church
The Marktkirche is the oldest Protestant church in downtown Essen.
It was the first church of Essen’s citizens and the starting point of the Reformation in 1563. It was built in the 11th century outside the gates of Essen Abbey’s free territory. In 2006, architect Eckhard Gerber redesigned the Marktkirche and added a new west choir made of blue glass. Since September 2006, the Protestant Church has operated a church re-entry centre at the Marktkirche, which is open every Wednesday.
