Old Synagogue

Built between 1911 and 1913, the Essen Synagogue was one of the most beautiful and largest in Germany.

During the 1938 pogrom, the interior was largely destroyed. In 1980, the ALTE SYNAGOGE was established as a memorial and a political and historical documentation forum.
Since 2010, the ALTE SYNAGOGE has been expanded into a centre for Jewish culture, with five exhibitions on the history of Essen’s Jewish community, the history of the building, the sources of Jewish traditions, Jewish festivals and the Jewish way of life.
