The Portal of Industrial Heritage presents the industrial culture panorama of the Ruhr region and North Rhine-Westphalia. Multimedia displays and innovative information stations showcase 18 impressive landmarks along the “Industrial Heritage Trail”. A route through the upper levels of the coal washing plant leads visitors up to the roof.
The coal washing plant at Shaft XII is the largest building in the surface facilities at Zollverein. When the mine was in operation, up to 24,000 tonnes of raw coal were processed there every day. At various stations, the mixture of coal and rock was sorted in different ways. Water was used, for example—hence the term “coal washing plant”.
