The Ruhr Museum is the regional museum of the Ruhr area. Its permanent exhibition presents the region’s fascinating natural and cultural history, from the formation of coal more than 300 million years ago to the structural transformation that has shaped the Ruhr metropolis today. Alongside its permanent exhibition, the Ruhr Museum regularly presents special exhibitions.
The coal-washing plant at Shaft XII is the largest building in the surface facilities at Zollverein. When the mine was in operation, up to 24,000 tonnes of raw coal were processed there every day. At various stages, the mixture of coal and rock was sorted in different ways, including with the help of water—hence the term “coal washing.”
