Ruhr Visitor Center

The first point of contact for all visitors to the Zollverein World Heritage Site, and the starting point for many guided tours, is the Ruhr Visitor Centre in the Coal Washery.

In addition to a tourist information office, the Ruhr Visitor Center offers a multimedia presentation about the Ruhr region. Visitors can find out about attractions in the immediate vicinity as well as the tourist attractions and activities available throughout the Ruhr Metropolitan Region.

The coal washing plant at Shaft XII is the largest building in the above-ground facilities at Zollverein. When it was in operation, up to 24,000 tonnes of raw coal were processed there every day. At various stations, the mixture of coal and rock was sorted, among other things. Water was used for this, for example—hence the term “coal washing plant.”
