Stratmanns Theater in the Europahaus
The former Amerikahaus, now the Europahaus and home to Stratmanns Theater, is located in the heart of the city on Kennedyplatz.
It opened in 1952 as the first American cultural institution in Germany, originally featuring a library, lecture hall and cinema, and exhibition spaces, with figurative sculptures adorning its exterior façades.
While the new city hall was being built in the 1960s and ’70s, the brick building served as the seat of the Mayor and Chief City Director.
Following renovations in the 1990s, the Europahaus became home to cabaret artist Dr. Stratmann and his Stratmanns Theater. For 25 years, he regularly took to its stage with his light-hearted medical cabaret, and for decades, leading names from comedy and cabaret have also been appearing here. The in-house restaurant is popular, too: whether or not you’re attending a show, Leo’s Casa is a great place to eat, with spacious outdoor dining available in the summer months.
