With charm, individuality, and passion, Studio-Bühne Essen at Korumhöhe in Kray-Leithe presents a varied year-round programme for all generations. STUDIO opened there in April 1990, and since then Studio-Bühne Essen—with around 90 members aged 8 to 80, all of whom work exclusively on a voluntary basis, and approximately 130 events attended by an average of 5,000 visitors each year—has become a vibrant and highly regarded part of Essen’s cultural life and far beyond. The municipal property used by Studio-Bühne Essen—a former primary school dating from 1910—was successfully refurbished from top to bottom by the City of Essen in 2018/2019, securing its future as a cultural venue. With STUDIO, the foyer as a second performance space, the stage workshop, its extensive collection of props and costumes, and its popular living-room café, Studio-Bühne Essen offers a unique infrastructure and programme diversity within Essen’s independent arts scene. From successful support for emerging talent to a varied repertoire featuring fast-paced comedy, intimate drama, imaginative children’s theatre, gripping plays, readings in the living-room café, and surprises in the foyer; from inclusive, intercultural community work to international appearances as a cultural ambassador for the city—the creative team at Korumhöhe has established itself over decades as an ambitious and versatile cultural institution in Essen’s theatre scene. Down-to-earth, close to everyday life, and full of ideas, the ensemble is committed to offering professional theatre without barriers.
