The Altenhof II workers’ settlement in Essen-Stadtwald is almost picturesque. The low-rise rendered buildings, complete with gardens and verandas, were built for former Krupp employees, who were intended to spend their retirement years there in pleasant surroundings. The architect Robert Schmohl drew inspiration from the English garden city movement. The entire settlement has been a listed monument since 1991.
