Works Swimming Pool at the Zollverein Coking Plant

Located in the heart of the Zollverein coking plant and surrounded by impressive industrial architecture, the Werksschwimmbad is probably Essen’s most unusual swimming pool.

It was conceived in 2001 by artists Dirk Paschke and Daniel Milohnic as part of the “Contemporary Art and Criticism” art project. The way the 2.4-metre-deep and 12.5-metre-long pool was built is just as unusual as its location. It consists of two shipping containers that were cut apart and welded back together. During the summer months, visitors of all ages can enjoy themselves in the pool and on the sunbathing areas around it.
