Zeche Carl

With its well-preserved facilities, some of which date back to 1855/56, Zeche Carl in Altenessen is considered an outstanding industrial monument.

The sociocultural centre has been around for more than 30 years, making it one of the oldest of its kind in Germany. It hosts rock concerts and comedy shows, art exhibitions and themed parties, courses and workshops, readings and children’s flea markets.

On the same site is the Maschinenhaus, a production venue for the arts. For decades, this small but wonderful ensemble, with its raw charm, has embodied in a very confined space the motto chosen by the European Capital of Culture in 2010: “Change through culture, culture through change.”
