Zollverein Monument Trail

Discover industrial history … at a site renowned for superlatives: Join one of our guided tours to explore the world’s largest and most powerful hard coal mine of its time, as well as Europe’s largest central coke plant.

Gigantic machines, vast halls, conveyor belts, mine cars and pipelines tell the story of a dynamic and moving industrial past. Where up to 12,000 tonnes of coal were once mined, processed and ultimately refined into coke every day, a guided tour of Zollverein takes you through the workplaces of generations of miners and coke workers.

You’ll gain insights into the working and living conditions of the miners and coke workers, and learn about Zollverein’s transformation from an industrial site into a World Heritage Site.
