Your ultimate weekend guide!
Welcome to Essen. If you have 48 hours to explore the city, you can look forward to an exciting mix of industrial heritage, green oases, and the buzz of big-city life. Here’s your perfect guide to an unforgettable weekend.
Day 1: World Heritage & urban flair
Your adventure begins in the north of the city, where history meets modernity.

- Morning – UNESCO World Heritage Site Zollverein: Start with an absolute highlight. Once the largest and still the most beautiful hard coal mine, and formerly Europe’s largest central coking plant, these gigantic industrial facilities are truly impressive. This imposing UNESCO World Heritage Site is THE landmark of the region. Where coal and coke once ruled, you’ll now find an abundance of art and culture, all surrounded by plenty of greenery. Since the facilities closed, nature has reclaimed its place. If you have a little time, be sure to visit the Red Dot Design Museum, which showcases around 2,000 design products. Or explore the newly expanded Monument Trail, where you’ll get a vivid sense of how the central coking plant operated. An absolute must and a popular Instagram spot is the bright orange escalator leading up to the Ruhr Museum.

- Afternoon – Grugapark: Head to the city’s green lung. Spanning a full 60 hectares, Grugapark offers beautiful gardens, animal enclosures, works of art, and plenty of space to relax. If you don’t feel like walking, you can also take a ride on the Gruga train.

- Evening – Rüttenscheider Straße (“Rü”): The best way to end the day is in the trendy Rüttenscheid district. “Rü,” as the people of Essen affectionately call Rüttenscheider Straße, is the city’s top nightlife strip: cozy cafés, trendy restaurants, and great bars line the street. Perfect for turning night into day.

Day 2: Nature, culture & cuisine
Day two will show you once again just how diverse and green Essen is.

- Morning – Baldeneysee, hiking & Villa Hügel: Start the day with a trip to the region’s premier recreation area: Baldeneysee. This 2.7-square-kilometer reservoir is the perfect place to unwind. Watch the boats, take a spin on the Weiße Flotte, or dip your toes in the sand at Seaside Beach Baldeney. In the mood for a hike? Perfect. The lake is the centerpiece of the BaldeneySteig, the trail of the same name. The route also takes you past Villa Hügel, which overlooks the lake. The former palatial residence of the Krupp industrialist family, with its huge park, is definitely worth a visit. Since the entire trail is around 26 kilometers long, you could choose to hike just one section around the lake. And if you’re in the mood for more hiking on your next visit to Essen, no problem—Essen has three more varied hiking trails to explore.
- Afternoon – Museum Folkwang: Now it’s time for culture! Head to the Museum Folkwang, one of Germany’s most renowned art museums. In its light-filled galleries, you can admire no fewer than four works by van Gogh—and admission is free. There are also exciting special exhibitions every year.

- Evening – Essen, from currywurst to fine dining: Admittedly, it’s a cliché, but a currywurst with fries (“Schranke”) is an essential part of any trip to Essen. But Essen has so much more to offer when it comes to food. If your budget allows, you can choose from no fewer than four Michelin-starred restaurants: “Chefs Atelier” and “Kettners Kamota” in Werden, “Teko by Lange Rodriguez” in Rüttenscheid, and “Hannappel” in Horst. End your weekend in elegant surroundings and take time to look back on your trip.
